Utilization of Associated Gas

Associated gas is a high calorific by-product of oil production, with valuable components. Treating associated gas is not expensive and the financial return can be high. Subsequent to treatment, associated gas is the perfect fuel for power generation. Treated associated gas is ideal for turbine and engine driven power generator sets. In addition to associated gas, power can be supplied to the operator using diesel, heavy oil or alternative gas. Some generator sets can operate on multiple fuels to produce electric power from fractional MW to 30 MW or more MW, using multiple parallel sets. Apart from associated gas, power can also be generated using diesel, heavy oil or alternative gas.

The type and capacity of each power generator set is chosen on the basis of customer requirements, power consumption, fuel gas chemical composition, flow rate etc. Our specialists can work out the optimal configuration for each power generator set using associated gas, and, if necessary, equip it with the appropriate treatment systems.A power generator sets would include power synchronization equipment, and voltage regulation equipment which allows the power generator sets to operate in autonomous regime as well as in parallel with external power grid with various voltages rates.
Power generator sets can be used as primary power sources for industrial facilities or can act as an emergency reserve in the case of power failure and therefore are especially useful where power may be intermittent or where there is an ageing power delivery infrastructure, subject to interruption.

Associated gas from crude production can be used for powering the generator sets and also it can supply the entire oil field, making the oil production facility independent from external power suppliers. Given the steady increase of electricity costs, it is clearly economically advantageous to use associated gas for power generator in the oil field.

There are several ways to use associated gas in the oil patch:

  • as a power generating gas for engine driven appliances
  • as a power generating gas for turbo driven appliances (both above systems can employ heat recovery systems)
  • to recover and monetize gas liquids
